Results for 2-23-2014 - Sail Division with the Bandit 25

Sunday the 23 we had a lively turn out for the first real kick off of the Bandit 25  Race Series. Thanks to all that came to compete or watch!

We used the SYC Short Olympic Course.
The first race was considered  a practice due to some competitors having problems getting the proper race wind. There will be an announcement in the  News and Announcements section concerning the way we tried a new system for programming race winds conditions and boat ID's. this is still in a new stage for the bandit and does not yet effect any other boats we intend to sail.

We had a good turn out, 11 boats starting the first race.

The second race a few folks had to leave leaving 8 worthy competitors! It also featured a Downwind start!

The results are as follows:

Tugby HUD!

Yasmin (YouAintSeenMe) has been a GREAT help in partially automating the referee's job for Tugby.  She wrote a script that when put in the End Lines of the Tugby Field shout when the Tugby Puck collides with them.  This helps the referee in that you don't have to peer so closely at the puck all the time.  NOW she has scripted a HUD that helps even more!!

The Tugby Hud has a lot of functionality,  Below is a screen shot of the referee's hud - below is some text from the first use of it.  Yasmin... thank you!!

[2014/02/23 08:08]  Nber Medici: shouts: GET READY TO PLAY

Tugby Results Updated for February 23rd, 2014 - End of the Winter Season

What a GREAT day yesterday!  I am still stoked.  I will be doing a "Nber's Corner" article on the Tugby Hud ...but I will say here... that I am a real fan of Yasmine's work.

I do need to report also that I made some errors on last week's scores.  Those have now been corrected, please see the previous Tugby Results post.

Last Sunday marked the end of the Winter Season, we reset the scores beginning with next Sunday.  I'd like to congratulate Allie with her first place in Points Earned.  For those players with more than 20 games under their belts, Lynn had the highest Win %.

You will have to come and see it!!  Remember that while it is always fun to play, it is almost as much fun to watch the Tugs fight it out.  There is an awesome viewing stand in Dutch Harbor (immediately south of the Tugby Field).  Come and play with us!!

Also, Dagger is announcing some pick up games during the week.  Watch the group notices for her announcements.

Opening day 2014 for the Sailing Division!

The excitement grew Sunday after the Power Boat races, with the start of the 2014 Sailing Season Opening Event.
I was overwhelmed at the attendance, it was great to see old friends and a lot of new ones!  The event started off at 11:30 with an Opening, featuring Mark Twain White and myself.  Of course, we both gave a short speeches, welcoming everyone and outlining our plans for the club.
The awesome part for me, was the turnout. During the gathering and then just after, I saw on the map as many as 50 people attending, and more on the borders trying to get in!  I’m thinking that although the speeches were wonderful and all that, the real reason people were there was excitement over the start of races and events at Starboards and the introduction of the Bandit 25.

During the opening meeting, there was a free giveaway of a Bandit, winner: Faline, (Pim Strom)!

 Congratulations, and please enjoy it!

After the meeting came the fun stuff. Two demo rezzers with Bandits had been set up.  People took to the Blake in droves, at one point as many as 25 or more, were out enjoying the new boat and trying its various features.
Everyone got their own boat to try!

There was room for everyone, but lots of people wanted to share their experiences.
After folks got used to the “feel” of their boats, came a low pressure -  fun race, using the Short Olympic course. It was really great seeing the start with 12 boats passing over the line.

Just a great sight to see!
Because it was not a formal race, results are not going to be posted, but most finished the course, and everyone had a great time with a great boat!

Most people stayed on for the LCC cruise taking place just after, while others did their own thing for the rest of the afternoon with the new boats.

Events ended with the finishing of the LCC cruise after party, featuring the awesome sounds from Benny The Boozehound. Great stuff Benny!

I want to thank everyone for coming! Next Sunday, we race these boats for real, same course, the Short Olympic, with the winds to be announced. I invite all people interested, whether you are experienced or not!

Come on out, casual racing, good people, and good fun!

An exciting 2014 for Starboards Sailboat Division

Ahoy! I'm Maiti Yenni.  This year marks the start of an exciting new chapter for the oldest Sailing club in SL. I am extremely honored and proud to be named the new Commodore for Starboards' Sailboat Division. I approached Nber and Mark some months ago wanting to help with activities at the club, a club that has an amazing history, with a group of club members as varied and interesting as one can get. It's an exciting time, getting to know various members, management staff, our Powerboat Division Commodores, and of course people from many of the other Yacht Clubs in SL.
Our course set for the sailing division will be as diverse as the members I serve. It is my plan that over the next few months, many of the features that have been the staple of the club will be revamped and brought back fully. But also, our goal is to guide people who are interested first in learning sailing, then introduced into racing later, if they desire. This mission will play an important part in the first events we are planning.
One such event is our up and coming race series with a newly introduced sail boat. This boat is a daysailer type boat, the Bandit 25, and represents this shift in our focus. It's the sort of boat and racing series that one may find in real life  - with average people getting together on the weekends and racing their boats at the local club. Good, relaxed fun!
As things get settled, yes hardcore racers, we will be getting that level of racing going once more as well..  Various events will be announced. Also, as activity increases, the club will start fielding sailors to events happening at other clubs. Social events hosted at the club are also clearly on the horizon.

It is my hope that you come and join us as part of the Starboards sailing community!

And So We Begin

As we begin the new year of seeing who is fastest around the buoys, we, Devyn Smythe and Deirdre Faulds, are excited to be named Starboard Yacht Club-Power Boat Division's Commodores. As many of you know, SYC is the oldest yacht club in Second Life. We are plotting a new course by creating the power boat division. During our introductory time trials and races, we have felt welcome in the Blake Sea community. We will strive to continue good relations with local yacht clubs and all Blake Sea users.

Some time ago we were approached by MarkTwain White to provide consultation and advice on powerboat racing in the Blake Sea. Since we have experience with powerboats and are familiar with the American Power Boat Association's racing rules, we felt that we could take on this endeavor. As time went on the consultation turned into the formation of a powerboat division for SYC. Our main motivation was to create a fair and realistic framework in which we could enjoy powerboat racing. We have always felt the need to organize the powerboat community in Second Life for the purpose of racing and have been given the opportunity by SYC to professionally and ethically do so.

While trying to create this framework, we must work within the constraints of SL.  Sim borders, lag, and variations in builder's boat scripts pose great challenges. We have designed our powerboat specifications to provide a degree of realism and playability in all of our approved boats. This is not meant to be exhaustive or exclusive, but instead to promote the building of boats in second life that are both reasonable and sensible within the confines of second life.

As the tide of power boat racing waxes we are thankful to be given the opportunity to provide leadership. Join us in creating a seaworthy offshore power boat racing community.

Today's Nber's Corner Is all about Tugby!

The game of Tugby has been in Second Life for a very long time...I'll have to check the dates of its first creation by Joepie Korobase.  I did the video below about four years ago and Tugby as a game was around for quite some time before that.  The video below needs to be updated and when I get a chance I will do that.  Come and play with us in lovely Santa Cruz region every Sunday morning at 8 am SLT.  Everything you need to play is FREE and the fun and comradeship is also free.
